On Friday, September 9th, Haitian Police arrested two independent
journalists, Kevin Pina (an American living in Haiti) and Jean Ristil (a
local journalist).

Pina and Ristil were released a few days later, but their arrests
represent a climate of fear that dominates in Haiti as the country moves
closer to presidential elections in November - elections which many
Haitians are calling illigitimate in the context of a coup d'etat
supported by Canada, the USA, and France on February 29th, 2004.

Here we speak with Jean Saint-Vil, an activist and journalist of Haitian
descent living in Ottawa. Saint-Vil addresses the details of the arrest,
and the threat of media censorship in the period of elections.

Recorded on September 13, 2005.

Produced for the CKUT (90.3FM) Community News Collective in Montreal by
Aaron Lakoff.
